What is special about you? Now that question may be difficult to answer because life sometimes has a cruel way of picking off our petals and breaking us in two and when you're broken it's very hard to feel special.

It can sometimes feel that anxiety and depression are inevitable for those of us who work at universities, whether as a teacher or student or—in my case—both. The impossible is so often expected of us.

Reboot - Steven Smith / May 19, 2016 by Richard Bentley

With mental health issues, speaking to someone can seem like an impossible task at times. We may worry about what to say, how to say it, working out what it is we need to ask, will people care or have time? The truth is, just by sharing it in whatever way you can, it is a step in the right direction.

I've Suffered Too - Andy Dunn / May 18, 2016 by Richard Bentley

Brain Food - Rose Wilkinson / May 18, 2016 by Richard Bentley

We are what we eat. We all know we should eat more vegetables, less processed foods, drink less alcohol and more water. We should pick fresh fruit over a Big Mac. When I wake up with a huge spot on my face after a night of excess, I know what's caused it.

We Are All Human - Rachel Kelly / May 17, 2016 by Richard Bentley

Shame and Mental Health - Petra Nunzi / May 16, 2016 by Richard Bentley

Over the years I’ve realised that I can only be me, I can’t change into a version of myself that I think other people want me to be. When I’m not authentic and true to myself, when I hide away who I really am for the sake of some kind of approval, that’s when I suffer

Be More Mike - Sam Forsdike / March 17, 2016 by Richard Bentley

How Talking Helps - Anonymous / March 16, 2016 by Richard Bentley

When I first received counselling for depression I was skilled at being able to talk.  God, could I talk!  There were many ways in which I could pick up the ball and run with it: you want to look at my childhood? OK, how much grief do you want me to relay?

Policing Mental Health - Peter Knight / March 15, 2016 by Richard Bentley

As a recently retired Police Officer I have had plenty of time to reflect on my 30 years of service. In particular I have realised how retirement has been something of a release from the stresses of police work and how important mental wellbeing was to me and my colleagues.

Be With - Naomi Bateren / March 14, 2016 by Richard Bentley

'Being with’ in therapy requires me to embrace difficult emotions, to sit in the fire long after I have stopped being comfortable, and accept that these emotions need to be put into the therapy space. This means I need to accept my own emotions and the emotions evoked in me by others.

The Importance Of Being Anxious - Poppy Hulse / March 13, 2016 by Richard Bentley

Writing and Mental Health: The Power of Words - Catherine Miller / March 12, 2016 by Richard Bentley

We all know the phrase ‘the pen is mightier than the sword’. It’s true, right? Nibs slashing swathes across pages, declaring wars and ending lives - words have power. But what if the battle is a personal one?

Our Blogs

'We are all human' is inspired by Jonny's words in The Stranger on the Bridge, the inspirational story that we use in ThinkWell to empower young people to explore issues around mental health.

'We are all human' highlights a key aim of ThinkWell to inspire empathy and  to remind us all that we are human, we all have mental health and we should all feel empowered to talk about it.

We started this blog to share different voices and perspectives on mental health.

This blog will have contributions from the Pixel Learning team but also from our wider network.

For anyone interested in writing a guest blog about mental health and what it means to you, do get in touch on  hello@pixellearning.org

The Pixel Frame blog is a regular feature on the latest developments in our organisation and the society around us.
